Project Graduation
Project Graduation held on graduation night,
is planned and sponsored by the parents of the high school seniors. Senior students and one guest enjoy their
last night together as a class before they leave for wherever. This party is drug and alcohol free and is fun for everyone. The volunteer parents work
all year organizing the activities and advertising this party. San Juan County has the distinction of
holding Project Graduation parties at all of its major public high school. No student in our San Juan
County has died or been injured on graduation night since Project Graduation was started over thirty (30)
years ago. Before then, it was expected that one or more students would die or be badly hurt that
night. Project Graduation attracts as high as 80% of the senior class members. Because of
this high rate of participation, Project Graduation would like to take credit for reduction of property damage
as well as an increase in student safety.
Drug Free San Juan County helps the different
school chairmen keep the Project Graduation going from year to year with guidance and financial contributions made
to Project Graduation. This guidance is required each year because there is a new group of seniors and
parents that put these activities together. The parties are unique to each school but all are similar in
their objectives and each party requires great amounts of work for all involved. The businesses in San
Juan County are continuing to support Project Graduation in awesome ways. Many people have served selflessly as
“Project Graduation” chairmen and workers for their high schools after Harriet Dame and Vi Briones got the first
parties going in1985.
